Endometrioma is when endometriosis causes a cyst in the ovary. As endometriomas grow pelvic pain worsens, which frequently leads to surgery. Removing an endometrioma damages the ovary and reduces the number of eggs thus threatening future fertility. Worse yet, inexperienced doctors will remove a woman’s ovary instead of the cyst.

Sclerotherapy is an exciting proven highly effective technology for treating endometriomas without surgery. The procedure is done in our office with minimal pain meds. The recovery is 1-2 days. The endometrioma disappears and pain is reduced. Surgery is avoided. Ovarian reserve is not compromised the way it is after cystectomy.

The procedure involves inserting a needle under ultrasound guidance into the cyst. The internal debris is removed and a sclerosing solution is instilled. Some women experience brief pelvic pain. The complication risk is less than surgery. Studies report that pelvic pain improves after the cyst is treated.

Sclerotherapy eliminates the need for ovarian surgery to treat endometriosis. If you have an endometrioma we would encourage you to schedule a consultation on the option of sclerotherapy.
